Can a USB-3 thumb drive be used with the TM4C129ENCPDT? Currently, it only seems to read USB-2 drives? Is this a problem in our firmware or a fundamental limitation of this microcontroller?
Thanks,
Karen

Hello Karen,
TM4C devices do not support USB 3.0. I am not even sure if USB 3.0 was even a released standard when the USB interface was designed.
USB 2.0 high speed requires an external USB PHY, we have a TI Design showing this: http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDM-TM4C129USBHS

USB 3.0 arrived 'well after' these 'other' MCUs had been introduced. (Poster could have 'investigated' for such data...)
It is (sometimes) possible for the 'Most Recent Standard' to make 'Special Accommodation' for those 'Past Standards.' Poster may wish to turn her attention to the new USB Spec - to determine if that capability exists. However - many (even most) of the advantages gained thru USB 3.0 - are likely to be 'dulled' (even lost) - when 'switching 3.0 into 'Accommodation Mode.' (if such truly exists - Staff here is divided...)
Poster appears to have three paths:
Thanks. USB-3, we read, is supposed to be downward compatible, but we haven't investigated yet exactly what that means. For the time being, will stick with USB-2.
Thank you - although another, 'Splash of Green' - to reward more thorough guidance - appears earned.
Might your 'real issue' be: 'How much is gained (if anything) by the Switch to '3.0's Downward Compatibility Mode' - and at what cost?'
Progress sometimes - yet not always - makes sense.
Do note that USB 3.0 (when Not 'dumbed down') offers 'MANY GREATLY IMPROVED & EXTENDED CAPABILITIES!'
When 'dumbed down' - might you find yourself, 'Unable to deploy - thus benefit - from those multiple improvements?' That's critical - clearly warrants your consideration - does it not?
Good luck on your hunt... Firm/I expect that USB 3.0 will become (even a further) 'necessary evil...'
