TM4C1294NCPDT: What if RAM consumption is more than 90%?

Part Number: TM4C1294NCPDT

Dear Team,

We are using TM4C1294NCPDT. It has 256 KB of RAM. We are building our application on TI-RTOS. If we consume more than 90% of RAM(assume our application's all memory requirements are taken care i.e. no surprises during run time), will there be any other side effects to our application? We know that we can get into trouble in future if we need to add new features.

Are there any guideline on typical and max RAM consumption by an embedded application? or it is all depend on the application requirement considering X years of upgrades and maintenance period?

Hi,

If you are certain that your memory requirements are all taken care, no surprises (e.g. heap and stack usage) during run time then I think you should be fine. Of course, if you have plan to upgrade your firmware with new features down the road you may reach the maximum RAM available. That will be something that you need to consider. Not sure what compiler optimization level you are using. See if you can further reduce your program footprint with optimization.

Hi,

You are right. My bad. I was thinking about optimizing the program image which is the flash. Your concern is the RAM.

One more question, if we need to go for higher RAM microcontroller which one could be the best fit. Please consider porting of our current application (TI-RTOS based) to new target environment.

Hi Abhijit,

There is no device with higher RAM in the Tiva family. Since I'm only supporting Tiva MCU, I don't really know whether or not other TI MCU can meet your application requirements. With that said, I do find the C2000 MCU that has higher flash and RAM and also supported by TI-RTOS. Please see below link. My suggestion for you is that you contact your local TI sales office and there will be TI representatives that can best assist on the product selection.

Hi Abhijit,

You can also use CCS memory allocation tool (under view) to see what SRAM/Flash is being occupied by the project.
