MSP432E401Y: MSP432E or TM4C129 for ethernet

Part Number: MSP432E401Y

Hoping you could give me a recommendation on your ethernet microcontrollers.  We’ve just finished a simplelink implementation on the MSP432P401 part and are ready to port to an ethernet implementation.  I had been thinking this would be the MSP432E401 part but now I’m not sure.  Used to be you marketed simplelink wired and wireless processors, but now it seems you only highlight wireless on the simplelink page.  When I go look for microcontrollers and filter by ethernet I only see the Tivas, not the MSP432E parts.  Seems I can only find those if I search for them directly.  They're no longer highlighted on any of the pages anymore.  I had been operating under the assumption like many others that tiva was the foundation for the msp432 and would be going away, but now i see that is not the case, and it seems the MSP432E is no longer en vogue... Could you give me a platform recommendation is so we can make sure we are going down the right path?

    Sorry for the delay in response here. Due to the extreme weather last week, our region in Texas had intermittent power issues which have caused delays in response on E2E other avenues. We ar eback online this week though.

    Now to your question. We've recently consolidated how we organize some of our MCU portfolio so ARM devices are in one place. As such, we still have some kinks to work out when it comes for searching for some of the devices. You can search for all Cortex M4F products (Includes TM4C and MSP432) as you can see from this page

    To your question on platform:

    • MSP432E4x1Y products are really focused towards Wireless Gateway applications, thus the compatibility with our SimpleLink Wireless Portfolio from a code standpoint
    • TM4C Products are more of your general purpose MCU that needs Ethernet. There is more device choice in this portfolio which serves a broader base of applications than the MSP432E4 devices.

    What about long-term support? It was mentioned previously, but I vaguely recall a forum post from a year ago that seemed to imply the MSP432 series was meant to replace the TM4C series, and that those may be phased out. Is this true, or is the current plan to support both indefinitely for the foreseeable future?

    I handle applications for TM4C and let me clarify a bit on our position with the TM4C devices.

    That perception has been around for a while but that is not the case. We did not offer a good image with how we organized the portfolio that lead to a lot of these ideas.

    First off I want to clarify that the TM4C devices have always been treated as products that must be supported for a long time we have always targeted this family towards industrial applications that have long life cycles. That has not changed, and we intend to support the TM4C family for many years as we continue to target those sorts of long-life span applications.

    Secondly, as Jace mentioned, as part of that re-organization we have taken corrective action to better position TM4C along side newer products instead of in it's own category. Having TM4C within Arm Based Microcontrollers section accurately reflects that it remains a key part of our MCU portfolio alongside MSP432 based on the needs outlined above.

    Lastly to build on why we see TM4C microcontrollers as good for general purpose applications, with this family we offer a broad array of device variants in terms of different flash sizes, pin count, package size, and peripheral options so you can pick out the right device to fulfill your requirements.
