TMS320F280049C: Using SYS/BIOS with TMS320F28x series on Motor Control System : Is it useful?

Part Number: TMS320F280049C

Hello. I'm beginner of TMS320F28x series.

Normally , I used to put SYS/BIOS on TMS320F28x series chips regardless of fields because of its several benefits.

Its intuitive GUI(.cfg file) makes me easier to understand whole thread structure & codes.

But when I posted a question on another forum about SYS/BIOS, They answered like :

" TMS320F28x series are used on motor control system or power conversion that is based on real - time control. Since these fields are activated by 1 or 2 main algorithm rather than scheduling several tasks, RTOS isn't used well ( That's also why there are few SYS/BIOS examples on 28X chips ) . Of course it can be helpful for users to schedule threads but RTOS spends some resources on chip. Finally it can bother fast speed process."

Q1)  Is it true ? SYS/BIOS spends enough resource to interfere with motor control? In my case, I barely feel about it because my projects are not that hard.

Q2) If so. What are some fields (or microcontroller chips) that use SYS/BIOS?

Q3) Could you recommend some reports about RTOS exept "TI-RTOS Kernel User's Guide" ?

Donghee Kim.

  • 1. That depends on what your requirements are. Most of our customers don't use RTOS, but we definitely have some who do. There are benchmarks documented for the maximum ISR latency that SYS/BIOS can add that you can use to judge whether or not it's too much for your application. There is also the zero-latency interrupts feature of SYS/BIOS that lets you plug interrupts outside of the SYS/BIOS if the overhead of the Hwi dispatcher is too much for some of your interrupts.

    2. Supported devices are listed in the release notes. You can see the devices listed for bios_6_83_00_18 here.

    3. This thread is a nice compilation of C28x specific information for SYS/BIOS.
