TMS320F28335: How to find an evaluation board

Part Number: TMS320F28335
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSDOCK28335

Hello,

I am looking for an evaluation board to try functions that will be implemented later on my device.

However, they all look obsolete, or I only found the TMDSDOCK28335, which doesn't fit me because it is supposed to be used with a docking station, where I am only looking for an electronic board.

Best Regards

Mattéo

  • Hello Matteo,

The TI expert for this question is out of office, please expect delays in answers.

    Many thanks,

    Opus

  • Hi Mattéo, you are correct, that is the only development EVM available for F28335.  May I ask what drew you to F28335?  We have several newer high-performance devices with LaunchPAD development EVMs, such as TMS320F28P650DK / LAUNCHXL-F28P65X.

  • Matteo,

There used to be something called a eZdsp. Unfortunately, the company that made it (Spectrum Digital) went out of business a few years ago. You may still be able to find a board from some online seller. However, as Joe correctly pointed out, there are many newer C2000 MCUs that are more powerful and with more features/peripherals that often cost less than F28335.

  • Hello Joe,

Thanks for your answer. I am using F28335, because the electronic board I am working on is already programmed with an F28335 DSP, and it would take too much time to reprogrammed it I think.

  • Understood Mattéo.  I'm sorry the TMDSDOCK28335 doesn't work for you.  Just to be clear, the TMDSDOCK28335 does include the controlCARD and dock, but your concern is not dock availability but something else about using it as your development environment.

If all you need is a board "to try functions", the ControlCard should satisfy your needs. As Joe clarified, TMDSDOCK28335 has everything you need to get going.

  • Hello both of you,

    Thank you for your answers.

In the control card, will I be able to visualize some signals I have on some pins ? Like in an eval board, with "easy access from an oscilloscope" pins ?
And just to be sure, everthing is ready in the control board ? But as I saw in the datasheet, I still need the docker station to  program the DSP, I can't do it by plugging directly my JTAG to the board ? Apart from that, the electronic control board is autonomous ? Also, I am not seeing any Quartz in the Kit Overview, I won't be able to use an external Quartz ?

    Best Regards

Probing on the controlCARD itself will not be trivial, but several signals are brought out to headers on the dock (Dock Schematic).  If any signal is not available, you might need to solder a wire to the controlCARD for improved access.

And just to be sure, everthing is ready in the control board ? But as I saw in the datasheet, I still need the docker station to  program the DSP, I can't do it by plugging directly my JTAG to the board ? Apart from that, the electronic control board is autonomous ?

The dock is primary providing power and JTAG access, everything else is on the controlCARD.  Yes you need the dock to connect to the device through JTAG.

Also, I am not seeing any Quartz in the Kit Overview, I won't be able to use an external Quartz ?

The controlCARD has a 30MHz crystal oscillator (controlCARD Schematic).  If you wanted to use a different external clock, you would have to replace what is already installed.  This signal is not routed to the dock.

    I hope this info helps.

Please note I will be out of office for the next couple weeks so responses to any further inquires may be delayed.
