Hello,

We want to add device firmware update capability to our product based on the TMS320F28388D via USB.

We want to be able to update CPU1/CPU2 and CM and the firmware update procedure should be triggered via FW by the application.

Looking at the documentation it seems we have to main option:

1. Use the ROM USB Bootloader, develop the usb flash kernels and use the TI utility USB flash programmer.exe

2. Develop a Flash based Bootloader and used TBD SW utility on the hist side (USB DFU?).

I was wondering if this has already been provided by TI into the C2000 SDK or if anyone has some better hints.

Hi Andrea,

Both are viable options, here are a few resources that can help with development:

A USB boot loading example has only been made for F2837x devices unfortunately. However, you can still refer to this as an example for F2838x.
There's also an application note about C2000 USB boot loading that may be helpful.
Here's a reference guide about the F2838x flash API
If you haven't already, you can refer to the boot ROM source code in your C2000ware root as reference.

Hi Matt,

thanks you! It seems you are point me to use the ROM USB Bootloader! I still have couple of questions:

1. is there a way to start the USB ROM bootloader by the application SW? (without toggling GPIOs)

2. If I modify the F2837x example (which i believe programs CPU1 and CPU2), can I make it also to program CM?

BTW, is there any ready available example with the Flash USB Bootloader instead?

Hi Andrea,

Yes, you can start the USB bootloader by application SW, you can make an assembly call to the Boot ROM address. If you do that, you need to make sure the stack is cleaned up properly.
No, this example is not compatible unfortunately.
There are no readily examples for Flash USB bootloaders, you'd have to offload the Flash API functions to RAM.
