TMS320F28P650DK: Temperature Issue with F28P650DK9NMRR

Hi Champs,

My customer has encountered a thermal issue with the MCU. It really gets hot after 1.5 hours (junction temp ~120 oC, package temp ~90 oC).

Some more details:

  1. What is the part number used, and package type? Part Number: F28P650DK9NMRR
  1. How many processors are running, CLA, CPU1 CPU2 and is lockstep enabled?  CPU1 + CPU2 running in parallel
  2. What is the clock setting, specifically SYSCLK?  Is device running at max 200MHz SYSCLK? 200MHz
  3. Is VREG enabled or disabled in the application? Enable Internal Vcore
  4. What are the peripherals running in the application? CLB, GPIO, ePWM, ADC, SPI, DMA, UART, CMPSS, EPWMXBAR, INPUTXBAR, OUTPUTXBAR
  5. Are there device peripheral IOs that are actively switching, IOs toggling, EPWM pins toggling? ePWM switching in 3phase, 20kHz

Unfortunately they can NOT measure 3.3V and 1.2V on their custom board. But the total consumption of the 5V supply is about 460mA or 2.3W.

Please help us sort out this issue.

Regards,

Kien

  • Hi Kien,

How is the layout of the circuit board?  is the F28P65x part away from other active components, like the 5V LDO which is consuming 2.3W?  Max power consumption of the F28P65x is about 0.65W at max TJ of 150degC operating at 200MHz frequency and all modules running.  Could it be that the 5V LDO for the 3.3v/1.2v supplies for the F28P65x is elevating the temperature of the entire system?

    Regards,

    Joseph

  • Hi Kien,

Have not seen an update on this post so marking it closed for now.  If this is still an issue, please post it in the forum.

    Best regards,
