TMS320F28388D: Need assistance for flashing .hex file in TMS320F28388D controller.

Part Number: TMS320F28388D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH

Hello,

I am working on a custom PCB that uses the TMS320F28388D controller. I am able to flash the controller successfully using an XDS110 debugger through Code Composer Studio, which generates a .out file. I can also flash this .out file using UniFlash without any issues.

However, I need to flash the controller using a .hex file instead. When I generate a .hex file and try to flash it through UniFlash, the flashing process completes, but the code does not run on the controller. It seems the controller is not working with the .hex file.

.out file size: 1192 KB
.hex file size: 254 KB

I have created the .hex file using C2000 Hex Utility:

Thanks.

  • Hello

I am still stuck at this issue, please let me know if someone knows how to solve this.

    Thanks,
    Shreyas

  • Hi Shreyas,

UniFlash is used primarily for loading the flash memory of the device with your application, so more for production programming. There is not an option to run the flash code in UniFlash unlike CCS, which contains a debugger that users can use.

    Thanks and regards,

    Charles

  • Hi Charles,

Thank you for the reply. I understand that UniFlash’s interface does not include a debugger like CCS.

However, my Problem is not about debugging, it’s that:

    1. I can flash a .out file (via CCS or UniFlash) and the MCU runs normally.

    2. When I flash the .hex file (generated with the C2000 Hex Utility) using UniFlash, the flashing completes successfully but the MCU does not start executing the code.

    3. The .hex file size is much smaller than the .out file, so could this mean that the image may not contain all necessary sections or information ?

Could you please clarify the following:

    1. Does a .hex file require a specific layout/header or boot signature for a C2000 device (TMS320F28388D) so that the CPU will start executing at reset?

    2. Is there a recommended way to generate a .hex file for this controller so that it behaves the same way as the .out file when flashed?

    Thanks and regards,
    Shreyas

  • Shreyas,

You typically need to set the memwidth and romwidth to 16 in the hex utility settings. It does not seems like you did so. Maybe you need to also specify the order. Something like:

TMS320F28388D: Issue with Hex File Generation using C2000 Hex Utility

    The device experts can confirm.

    Thanks
