Problems using controlCARD F28069 with USB docking station XDS100v1

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE

Two issues:

1) http://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/tms320c2000_32-bit_real-time_mcus/f/171/t/140599.aspx notes that the docking station signal names do not correspond to the signal names on the control card for the F28035- they don't for the F28069 either.  Instead, the following chart must be used:

Pin          Processor            Docking station
#             signal name        signal name
30           GPIO 40                GPIO 48
31           GPIO 42                GPIO 84
68           GPIO 44                GPIO 59
32           GPIO 50                GPIO 86
42           GPIO 51                GPIO 87
20           GPIO 54                GPIO 60
70           GPIO 55                GPIO 61
22           GPIO 56                GPIO 62
72           GPIO 57                GPIO 63

Also, note that pins GPIO 52-53 are not brought out to the interface and that GPIO 35-39 exist but are labelled as JTAG lines

2) Having successfully run the SCI echoback example with an F28027 controlCARD onto the docking station port J3, I expected no problems when I replaced it with an F28069 controlCARD and ran the '69 SCI echoback example program.  Having spent most of Friday with no communication whatever, I checked the schmatics and discovered that while the F28027 controlCARD routes SCIA to pins GPIO 28 and 29 through an isolator and an RS-232 driver and onto pins 2 and 52, the F28069 controlCARD does not do so:  it does not provide RS-232 output, and there is nothing at all connected to pins 2 and 52.  I will try hooking these signals up myself, but it sure would have been nice to have known this before wasting a day.  Does experimenter kit http://www.ti.com/tool/tmdxdock28069 have a different docking station?  Per http://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/tms320c2000_32-bit_real-time_mcus/f/171/t/155426.aspx I verified that I have an XDS100v1 with the FT2232D part.

  • Hi Bruce,

There is only one docking station for all controlCARDs. All controlCARD schamatics are found in controlSUITE.

    Thanks,

    Damian

  • Then it sure would be nice for the F28069 controlCARD to have an RS-232 driver chip on it so that its SCI example programs have some chance of producing the expected result, or for the user to be alerted that the J3 connector requires soldering and a glue chip to be operational when used with a 28069 but not with a 28027.  This seems like a gratuitous incompatibility- are the driver chips that expensive?

I feel a little better now.

Thanks for getting back to me Damian- I realize you're not the one who made those decisions, but please pass this along.  controlSUITE was useful for helping me understand the cause of the inability to run the sample program.

Ken, FYI for your next training class.

  • Bruce,

We take every effort to maintain as much compatibility as possible between controlCARDs.  The SCI pins on the F28069 controlCARD are routed out on pins GPIO-28 and GPIO-29 the same way they are for F28027.  You can access SCI through the USB on the docking station.

If you use the default controlSUITE installtion path, you can find the schematics for the controlCARD and docking station at:
