InstaSPIN DRV8301 GVDD_UV & Fault

Hi,

Recently purchased the DRV8301 with 28069 control card.  I was running lab4 of InstaSPIN and PMSM motor was spinning with 48V and under no load condition i.e., <0.5 amp.  While I was attempting to rerun the Fault LED was active.  Tried all means and reinstalled motorware too. It did not help to sort.  Tried to reduce the voltage PVDD to 12V and the Fault LED is active the moment the program is run.

Checked the SPI 8301 registers it shows FAULT-1024 & GCDD_UV 512.

Let me know how to sort this.

    It sounds as if damage may have occurred to the PCB. To clarrify, you were running properly before the FAULT becaome active? Can you power everything off and measure the resistance from the GVDD capacitor to GND. The GVDD capacitor is C4.

    Are you operating in a high static environment?

    Thanks for the response.  

    1) To clarrify, you were running properly before the FAULT became active?  Yes indeed.

    2) I switched off everything and measured the resistance from GVDD cap to GND i.e., C14 if I am right.  It measures 4.5 K Ohms.  while it measures 14.5K Ohms across C4 cap.

    3) Are you operating in a high static environment? - I have computers around and the board is placed on wooden platform.

    Pl review and suggest how to resort this at the earliest.

  • Can you measure the voltage across the same capacitor with EN_GATE low and high.

    As suggested tried the lab exercise2a to measure the voltages.  Amazingly the fault LED was not ON initially but on repetition the same error is observed ie GVDD & Fault

    The voltages measured is as mentioned below

    s.no. |  Voltage @ Cap 14   |   Voltage @ Cap 4   | PVDD

    1       |         10.4V                |            0.71V            |  24V               Initial run

    2       |          5.4V                 |             0.61V           |   24V              On repetition

    Attached the presentation too.  Pl review the above data and suggest how to resolve the issue at the earliest.

  • Hi KV,

    I am slightly confused. Why are you measuring C14? This capacitor is used by the buck regulator.

    The GVDD capacitor should be C4. Your data for C14 and C4 appears to be reversed. Can you double check.

    Sorry for the delay. It is possible one of the external MOSFETs have been damaged. When the gate driver is enabled the GVDD regulator (which supply the external gate drive voltage) is being loaded down causing the GVDD_UV FAULT.

    Can you toggle each half-bridge one by one and see when the FAULT occurs exactly?
