TMS320F28027F: InstaSPIN in Torque mode at slow speed

Part Number: TMS320F28027F
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS, MSP-EXP430F5529LP, TMS320F280049C, MSP430F5529, DRV8323

I want to control a motor at slow or zero speed in torque mode, however, InstaSPIN FOC says it does not work well at slow speeds and InstsSPIN Motion uses an encoder but does not list Torque mode as an option.  I have an encoder.

Can I use instaSPIN FOC in sensored torque mode?

Can I use instaSPIN MOTION in sensored torque mode?

Thank you

  • I notice that the TMS320F28027F is obsolete.  What is the latest launchpad to use instead?

What about using the BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS and a MSP-EXP430F5529LP?  can this be used in sensored torque mode (with an encoder? with a hall effect sensor?)

    Regards

  • Please look at TMS320F280049C for our latest InstaSPIN-FOC device. Be aware that  InstaSPIN-FOC is mostly a sensorless FOC solution, however, you can always modify the torque mode examples and replace the FAST observer output with encoder feedback.

  • Thank you for the reply.  I had a few followup questions:

    1. How does the TMS320F280049C compare to using a MSP430F5529 USB LaunchPad Evaluation Kit coupled to a BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS booster pack?

    2. The documentation says the booster pack features "Sensored or Sensorless BLDC Firmware Available." Does this use instaSPIN?

    3. Is the control software resident on the MSP430 or on the DRV8323?

    4. Can I customize the control (as I can do with the C2000 series)?

    5. Can I run a hall effect sensored torque mode and use a program on the MSP430 processor to control it?

    Thank you!

  • Here are answers to your questions:

    1. How does the TMS320F280049C compare to using a MSP430F5529 USB LaunchPad Evaluation Kit coupled to a BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS booster pack?

The MCU selection is related to the end application and performance you want to achieve. MSP430 is targeting lower cost market and have ultra-low power consumption, where C2000 is targeting high performance market.

    2. The documentation says the booster pack features "Sensored or Sensorless BLDC Firmware Available." Does this use instaSPIN?

    No.

    3. Is the control software resident on the MSP430 or on the DRV8323?

    MSP430.

    4. Can I customize the control (as I can do with the C2000 series)?

Most likely. If you need further help from MSP430, I can have colleague from MSP430 team to help you.

    5. Can I run a hall effect sensored torque mode and use a program on the MSP430 processor to control it?

    Same as above.
