MSP430FR6989: High current consumption in low power modes

Hello Guys,

Good day. We need your help to check our customer's query.

Currently they are doing a project using the msp430fr6989 launchpad. They used it for low power modes applications. They have tried all the low power modes and the example codes present in ccs but when they use the energy trace technology the current never goes lower than 200uA. They have only populated the 3.3V and GND jumpers while testing the current using energy trace technology but the result is the same. The current never goes lower than 200uA.

Did we miss something or could you suggest where to check. Thank you in advance for the support.

Are you using Run (right-arrow button) or "Run->Free Run"?

I just tried example msp430fr69xx_lpm3_03.c on a Launchpad and got 0.8uA with Free Run, and 1.6mA with Run.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your response. Our customer have already tried “free run” but did not get the expected result. The energy trace technology still shows current more than 250uA.

Which example are you using?

You mentioned the J101 ("bridge") jumpers Is anything connected to any of the header pins (J1-J4)?

Hi Bruce,

Currently, they are using the msp430fr69xx_lpm3_03.c example code. They have only populated the GND and 3.3V jumpers on the isolation block and haven’t connected anything on the J1-J4 jumper headers.

This is a good mystery.

Can you tell whether it is actually going into LPM? (EnergyTrace++ "Mode" sub-view) In my case I see steady LPM. (LPM3.5, oddly enough, but maybe that's a CCSv8 thing.)

Hi Bruce,

Yes it is going into low power mode. They are using ccs v10. The energy trace++ shows lpm3 mode for the whole time. They also see steady lpm3.

Unfortunately, our customer have only one launchpad and have not tried to use different launchpad yet.
