Hi E2E,

I have a problem with my code which is that when it enters LPM3 it consumes more than it should. As I understand it, if everything is ok, in LPM3 using ACLK, it should consume around 15uA.

In my code, every time it enters LPM3 it consumes much more than that.

Could someone take a look at my code? It might be a lot of work but I would appreciate it very much, thanks.

    If you are consuming too much current, then there is some peripheral that has not been shutdown before entering LPM and keeping one of your clocks on. Place  a NOP before entering LPM3 in order to place a breakpoint there. From there you can utilize the register view in CCS to see what clocks and/or peripherals are still active.

    Specifically check our the which clocks have the clock request active, then you can track down which peripherals use that clock and are keeping it on.

    Hi E2E,

    I am having power consumption problems in my microcontroller. I think the cause of the problem is the pin configuration because depending on how I configure it, it consumes more or less. How should I configure the pins so that I can use them in my code and not consume anything?

    The pins I need are:

    - 1.4 ----> MOSI (SPI)
    - 1.5 ----> SIMO (SPI) ----> I'm not using this for nothing
    - 1.6 ----> SCLK (SPI)
    - 1.7 ----> STE (SPI)
    - 1.1 ----> INPUT
    - 1.2 ----> OUTPUT
    - 1.3 ----> OUTPUT

    The rest of the pins I don't use for anything. Thanks in advance.

    I've merged your posts together as they are about the same subject. Please stick to utilizing this thread for further discussion on this topic.

    For the clocks, please look into the Clock System (CS) chapter of the User Guide for an explanation of clock registers. to check. 
    Please also see section 1.6 Connection of Unused Pins for guidance on your second question.

    You can also utilize the ULP Advisor (Ultra Low Power) within CCS for more tips on how to lower your power consumption. You can also utilize EnergyTrace, if you have a compatible debugger (MSP-FET or Launchpad) for additional insight on your power consumption. 

  • I ran this code on a Launchpad. When I paused it, it was not in LPM3, rather it was spinning waiting for P1.1 ("BUSY") to go low, drawing about 250uA.

    When I brought P1.1 low by patching P1.1 briefly to GND, it went into LPM3 and drew about 18uA.

    You probably need to describe your circuit and test sequence.

  • The black part is in LPM3, but as you can see, the power consumption is 1.14mW. It means that it consumes around 350uA using (3V3).

    Are you using Free Run?

  • If you are at around 350uA, then this tells me you are only reaching LPM0, so SMLCK is still on. Check your peripherals that are still utilizing SMLCK.

  • I turned off the smclk clock with the command "CSCTL5 |= SMCLKOFF" and it still consumes the same...

    This means there is still a peripheral that is requesting the clock, as such clock requests override what settings you have. I suggest disabling peripherals you are using that are being driven by SMCLK one at a time until you find the situation that is causing the extra current.
