MSP430FR6989: MSP430 recovery failed

My customer has the questions as follow:

Hello, I have been having issues debugging the MSP430FR6989 Development Kit,
and once I try to debug an error pops up stating that the device needs to recover.
Once I click recover, it loads for a few seconds then states recovery failed.

I am pretty much having the same issue with this forum page,
I have looked at this forum page but haven't found a solution yet.

Could you give me a help?

Hi Yuki,

Let's try some things to get this up and running again.

Is this device new or has it run a program before?
Have they tried using the CCS Cloud tool to update it?
What version of CCS are they using (or what are they using if not CCS)?
Does the device show up in the device manager (or their OS equivalent)?

Thank you for your kindly reply.

This is the first time I am running a program on the system.

I have tried using the CCS cloud system to run an update but it outputs the same error.

I have tried updating with versions v20.2.5 & v4.4.8 .

I do not see the device being recognized under the device manager folders.

Hi Qi Liu,

Have you tried using a clean slate? Delete the drivers and reinstall them, the newer versions of CCS should have the drivers or if you just want to install the drivers themselves they can be found here MSPDS.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling CCS and its drivers but it has not helped unfortunately.
The device still does not show up in the device manager as well.
Could there possibly be a problem with the hardware since the screen no longer displays text or its stopwatch and temperature features when first launched.

Does a green LED light-up when plugging the board in?

Yes, the green LED lights up but the screen will not display anything.

I believe that the firmware on the ez-FET might have been corrupted, a cold-boot should fix the issue. I am looking into a way to cold-boot the on board ez-FET and will get back to you.

We can try some more troubleshoot options in the mean time.

Try using the CCS Cloud and run the blink example found here on a different machine.
Does this problem happen on other devices?
On the jumper block are all the spots connected, GND, 5V, 3V3, SBWTDIO, and SBWTCK. (Should look like picture below)
