MSP430FR2676: read and send serial data

Part Number: MSP430FR2676

I have been working with the MSP430FR2676 in conjunction with the captivate design center (generating the CCS code and uploading with the programmer). Everything is working great and I can see the output of my sensors in the design center software and tune them. I am wondering how do I go about getting the raw numerical data that's being transmitted from the MSP430FR2676. Just as an example previously I was using the ESP32 microcontroller for capacitive touch sensing and was using the Arduino IDE to send serial data at 9600 baud rate over a COM port then acquiring that data inside of Unity to be used for other applications.

Any help is greatly appreciated and I apologize if my lack of knowledge makes my question unclear.

  • Hi Alex,

Great question.  Yes, unfortunately there aren't clear instructions on how to do this, but there an example demo that is included with the Captivate Design Center installation.

You will find the examples on your PC in:

    C:\ti\msp\CapTIvateDesignCenter_1.83.00.08\CapTIvateDesignCenter\example_projects\CaptivateDesignCenterWorkspace\TI_Examples\FR2676_Backchannel_UART

There is one for the FR2676 and FR2633, in case others stumble across this post and are using FR2633.

  • I'm fairly lost on this. So when I have the programmer and debugger modules connected via USB to the computer I am having the setting in design studio set to UART, so in order for it to read the sensor data I assumed the code that was generated for CCS would have some code telling the chip to send data through UART and then the debug module converts this? If I programmed the chip and had it by itself, how would I get the sensor data into the computer? I assumed there would need to be CCS code written in order to accomplish this through UART and then have UART to USB converter, but I don't see it in the generated code from design studio. The backchannel UART simply has no communication setting selected but when I generate the source code for CCS I still don't see any code telling the chip to send data and when I read the COM port that the USB is connected to I see that it's successfully connected but still see no data being transmitted (trying all the different baud rate settings and assuming no parity with 1 stop?).

The way I thought things worked was I setup and tune my sensors in the design studio then generate the source code for CCS and upload to the MSP430FR2676 chip. This would be sending vectors of raw data representing the reading of the sensors through UART then I can do whatever I want with this data, such as even hooking this up to an external Bluetooth module to send the data wirelessly to computer or even just using the UART to USB converter and reading the data over the COM port in a terminal.

Keep in mind I'm very new to all of this.
