Li-ion battery charger solution using an MSP430 MCU

Hi, I am trying to design a charger for Li-ion battery using an MSP430 MCU as given in the application report, "https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa287a/slaa287a.pdf". But I have some queries:

  • How is the duty cycle and frequency of the PWM signal decided? In the example in the report (500mAh, 4.2V Li-ion battery) the values were directly given for them.
  • How are we setting current signal for the required output current for constant current(CC) mode, and voltage signal for the output constant voltage for constant voltage(CV) mode?
  • In the report there is a formula mentioned for calculating the value of the inductor, but the value of inductor(L') calculated from the formula does not match the one that is claimed in the report. Can someone please help me how to calculate the value of inductor?
  • Also how to calculate the value of capacitor C1?

  • Circuit :
  • Inductor formula:

Here in the inductor formula if the values are put of the other variable, then the value comes to be about 30.83 micro Henry which is not matching with the claim that inductor needs to be at least 62 micro Henry.

  • 1. The duty cycle is decided by current and voltage. To reach this charging curve.

    2. I think you need a PID to control the current and voltage.

    3. Not quite sure how to calculate the inductor. It is just like a buck circuit. Sorry, it is over my knowledge. You can do more search on the buck.
