MSP-TS430PZ100USB socket orientation incorrect

A heads up - Just wanted to point out after burning my finger that the socket on my Rev 1.2 MSP-TS430PZ100USB target board is oriented incorrectly - the pin 1 marker on the socket is on the upper-left which is connected to pin 76 on the PCB.  The socket needs to be rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise.  I can confirm inserting an MSP430F6638 according to the socket pin marker will result in massive thermal runaway and a fried MSP...

    as far as I can tell from the design files MSP-TS430PZ100USB Development Board Schematics, Layout, and BOM everything looks good. Maybe you can post a picture of the target board in question?

  • The BOM calls out IC201-1004-008 as the socket while mine has IC357-1004-053N.  I can't find much information on the Yamaichi website regarding the specific differences but an ebay auction for IC201-1004-008 that I found shows that it doesn't have a molded pin 1 marker, which probably accounts for the confusion.

  • You're right, on he first picture, the marker is wrong.

    My socket on my 5438 breakout board does not have any marker on the socket.

    Looks liek there was a change in the socket supply, and nobody noticed that the mounting orientation is important now (before it was a don't care)

    However, on the board itself, pin 1 is clearly marked with a '1'.

    This doesn't keep you (and didn't keep me) from inserting the MSP wrongly by misinterpreting the marking ons the chip itself (the pin 1 marker was less visible than other markers in the other corners of the chip)

    so, ones only reference when inserting the MCU should be the pin 1 marking on the PCB (silkscreen).

    You should mask the moulded pin 1 marker on the socket (i.e. a little piece of tape) and make a new one at the right place.

    Hopefully somebody at TI will update the manufacturing data for the target board to account this.
