MSP430FR2433: External 32kHz crystal oscillator start up time

Part Number: MSP430FR2433

Hi-

We are seeing variable crystal oscillator start up times, ranging from 150 to 720 msec.  Is this variability expected?  Table 5-4 in the datasheet gives a typical start-up time of 1000msec.  I guess we are most concerned about what is the maximum start-up time for the XT1 crystal oscillator of the MSP430FR2433?

Thank you.

  • Hi Dave,

The start up time is mostly controlled by the crystal and the parasitic capacitances on the crystal pins and MSP430 pins driving the crystal.  Look at the manufacturer's data sheet and check you are using the correct values for the caps that connect from each leg of the crystal to ground.

There is guidance on how to do this properly in the MSP430 32-kHz Crystal Oscillator application note, SLAA322D, and the MSP430 LFXT1 Oscillator Accuracy application note, SLAA225A.

  • HI Dave,

It's been a while since we have heard from you, so I'm going to assume you were able to move forward with your project.
