MSP430FR5994: Difference between ADC "enable conversion" and "start conversion"

Part Number: MSP430FR5994

In page 894 of the user manual, we are given the following for ADC operation.

What is the difference between enabling conversion and starting conversion?

  • Hi Oscar,

Good question.  You can think of the ADC12ENC as a gate that controls if the conversions can be started or not.  If ADC12ENC is = 0, then no conversions can be started.

There are 2 ways to trigger the conversion.  One is through software by setting the ADC12SC bit.  As the datasheet shows, you can set both the ACD12ENC and ADC12SC at the same time. The other method uses a trigger signal from one of the other MSP430 peripherals, as shown here in the table.  You will need to check the datasheet to see which ones apply to the FR5994.
