MSP430F5438A: Cannot identify target device

Part Number: MSP430F5438A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430FR5994,

Hi,

We are trying to flash MSP430F5438A in custom board through the debugger of MSP-EXP430FR5994 Development Kit.In one of the board ,getting the error "cannot identify the target device".When we probed the power supply is coming properly to the chip.what will be the issue  for this and how we will debug?

Thanks

Regards

Aswathy

  • Hello Aswathy,

So this can be a number of things, so I will list out a few things you can try to debug. Most likely its a connection issue between the LP and your board.

    • Programming from the LP to a target device is only through SBW, as such its extremely sensitive to excessive capacitance on the lines. This can make it difficult to program off board.
      • Makes sure wires from LP to another board are extremely short.
      • Ensure programming traces on board are not excessively long.
    • Ensure programming circuit and connections are the same as pictured in Figure 2-3 in the MSP430 HW Tools Users Guide
    • Make sure you are sharing a GND connection between the boards.
    • Make sure you are jumpering off of the debugger side of the isolation jumpers on the launchpad.
    • If powering your custom board via launchpad connection, make sure your board is not drawing more current than is allowed by the debugger via USB connection.
    • Follow the guidance in section 2.6 of the MSP-EXP430FR5994 Launchpad Users Guide for external programming connections.
  • Hi Jace,

We tried with short length wires around 6-8inch.We have 6 boards, in one board only we are facing this issue. The board is having on board power supply so there is no much current drawn by USB.

we attaching the screen short  of error. Any other way for debugging it?

    Regards

    Aswathy

  • Hello Aswathy,

6-8 inches sky wiring from LP to your board is going to be too long.  Put a scope on your SBW signals to see their integrity. Shorten your wires, and you will most likely get a better connection.
