MSP430FR2632: FRAM IO Cell ESD Protection.. Diode Clamp Circuit/Current..

Part Number: MSP430FR2632

Hi Team MSP FRAM,

My Customer asks..

The FR2632 datasheet states “Pin Diode current… +/- 2mA”.

Just for confirmation,  the ESD protection circuit in the MSP430 is comprised of two clamping diodes? One diode between VCC and GPIO and the other between GPIO and GND? Or do you use a different protection strategy?

Thx, Merril

  • Hi Merril,

Yes that is the correct protection strategy. Because the maximum current is 2 mA, using too high of a voltage would result in a current over 2 mA and could damage the diodes; in that case, they would need to use a series resistor or another external way to reduce the current. In general, I would not advise the customer to apply a higher voltage than recommended.

    Best,

    Amruta
