MSP430FR5969: Reset of microcontroller

Hi,

I am using two counter modules,(TIMERA1, and TIMERA2) to count external pulses, To test the module I am providing input through external Function Generation and there is also an internal pulse generator that will provide input at a 5 min interval when these two signal meet the sometimes the module resets after 5 minutes interval in an irregular manner.

If the Function generator input is not provided it works without resetting for more than hours, how could I stop reset of the microcontroller?

but in the Debug mode the reset scenario does not take place, how could I implement it during normal operation?

Hi Sasi,

There are a few different things that can cause a reset of a device, such as invalid memory access, BOR Event, or watchdog expiration.

It isn't obvious to me from your description which may be occurring. If you initialize a debug session in CCS, and then use Free Run mode does the reset still occur? When debugging this will be an option under the "Run" Menu. I would want to see if you could read the PMMIFG register after a reset, but I understand this may be challenging.

Can you also describe the input you are providing? Is it within the maximum ratings for the device?

In the FREE run mode, reset does not occur.

The input provided is within the maximum ratings

Hi Sasi,

What debugger are you using? Can you try to connect to the MSP430 while its running after the erroneous reset has occured?

Hi Brandon,

The above procedure is to stop resetting when it enters the debug mode, but for me, that is not the issue.

I tried to read the PMMIFG register and most of the time the value read is 0x0200 and a few times it is 0x8200

Hi Sasi,

Are you using LMP4.5 or LPM3.5 in your code? Are you using the watchdog at all?

I am not using any low power mode, watch dog timer is used and in a seven-second interval the watch dog timer count value is reset

Hi Sasi,

What is the status of your SYSRSTIV after these resets? A value of 0x16 would indicate your watchdog is resetting the device. This would most likely just be due to your code hanging somewhere when this interrupt isn't serviced.

Hi Brandon,

It is due to watchdog timer, After commenting watchdog timer our code doesn't reset but it hangs at a particular interval, this is related to another issue which I have parallelly asked

Hi Sasi,

Understood. If you are hanging due to that missed interrupt, it seems reasonable that correcting that issue will allow you to re-enable to watchdog and prevent these resets from occurring. We can continue to debug in that other thread for now.
