MSP430I2040: what could cause simple code such as blinky or UART echo unable to run?

Hi,

I was working on a project based on MSP430I2040. While trying to figure out why the initial code didn't work as expected, I removed various parts of the code, then built and downloaded into MCU. After a while, I found out even simple example code such as UART echo won't run on that MCU.

The run button in attached image will simply stay grey, pictured below.

My question is: does this mean this MCU is bricked for good? If so, what could be the cause?

I can still download all sorts of code into that MCU, it just doesn't run.

As a quick experiment, try removing low_level_init.c from the build [something like "[file]->Properties->Resource->Exclude from Build"].

It's possible one of the checks in that function is failing on your chip. Without the startup code, the chip won't work great but it will limp along.

the UART echo is a brand-new project, it can run in a board that has not been flashed with other code before, but the not board that I had been tinkering with.

You are right. Once I removed low_level_init.c, the uart echo code can run. That code checks jtag password and tlv vector checksum. Most likely it is the later. Just curious, how could tlv vector get corrupted?

The TLV is in Information Flash, and thus can be erased. It is protected with LOCKSEG, but I don't know whether the CCS Download settings ("Erase main and information memory" option) manipulate LOCKSEG.

The Information Flash is only a single segment, which makes putting user data there a bit hazardous (need to copy the TLV out then back in). I (vaguely) recall that I avoided touching Information Flash entirely.
