MSP430FG6626: constant clock at or close to my system clock, around 20MHz.

Part Number: MSP430FG6626

Hi Team,

Good day. I am posting this inquiry on behalf of our customer.

"I am using a MSP430FG6626IPZ. I would like to put out a constant clock at or close to my system clock, around 20MHz. Which IO should I use? Should I use ACLK, TA0.0, and SMCLK?"

Please help to advise. Thank you for extending your support

Kind regards,

Marvin

  • Hello Marvin,

The fastest you will get a timer output is 1/2 your MCLK (System Clock) speed. You may want to look into just outputting ACLK or SMCLK. SMCLK should be able to reflect your MCLK directly with no dividers, although, you could just output MCLK directly via a pin. Any clock you can output will be System Clock + some divider, so you won't be able to output something that's just a few MHz off of your main clock. You could place an HF Xtal on XT2 and output that via ACLK or SMCLK.

  • Hi Jace,

Good day. Thank you for your response. Please see the feedback from our customer.

"Which pins/signals should I use to do what is suggested?"

  • Hello Marvin,

Please see the device datasheet, Section 7, for pinout descriptions, including what pins different clocks can output directly to.
