Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430I2040,
Hello,
a general question about the i2041.
Is it suitable to measure thermocouples or are there any
better suited MCU with 16/24Bit ADC in the same size?

Hello,

I suggest an external conditioner. Check out TI's app note about a 2 channel K-type measurement system, SBAA354.
Hallo Keith,
Die Idee ist gut. Nur auf der LP ist keine MCU und kein externer AD-Wandler auf der LP. Gibt es
keine MCU mit 16/24Bit und einer Baugröße von 5x5mm?
The idea is a good one. Only on the LP is no
MCU and external AD converter on the LP. Is there
no MCU with 16/24Bit and a package size of 5x5mm?
You haven't even told us what thermocouple you want to use. But you can do the math. Find the resolution of the ADC at the minimum reference voltage. From there you can see what temperature resolution you get from your thermocouple.
Note that no MCU can measure negative voltages.
Michael,
You could do this with the MSP430i2041 or the MSP430I2040 (if you don't need the full 32kB flash and 1kB RAM). Those are probably the best price/ADC resolution in the size you want. The 24-bit delta sigma is well suited for measurements of slow changing parameters like temperature.
That application note Keith linked is a good resource. I'd also recommend A Basic Guide to Thermocouple Measurements (SBAA274) if you are new to using thermocouples in general.

Hello Brandon, Hello Keith,
first of all, thank you very much for your answers.
You wanted to know which thermocouples we want to measure.
Well, that it is a transmitter, it measures type S, K, T, J, B, N, E, R, C, L, U. I have been dealing with thermocouples for almost 20 years and have written some firmware forTI-MCUs. But now we have very special requirements for a project, so I need a small MCU with max. 5x5mm and 16/24bit SD-converter. We like to use TI MCUs for this. My question therefore aimed at whether the i2041 is suitable for this, or whether TI has comparable MCUs in the portfolio, the
which I cannot find at the moment. Can you help me further there. As I said, external ADCs cannot be used for space reasons. Do you have any suggestions / proposals in this regard.
best regards
Michael
Hi Michael,
Thank you for clarifying.

You have selected the best device from our MSP430 portfolio for this in terms of your size and ADC requirements.
I don't believe we have a full proposal/design for using the SD24 with any kind of thermocouple. That said, the SD24 inside the MSP430I204x family does not differ from an external delta-sigma ADC with internal PGA in any substantial way. So anything you could do with an external 24-bit Sigma Delta you can do with this integrated one. As Keith said you just need to keep in mind that the supply is unipolar .
