MSP430F5438A: Device not supported?

Part Number: MSP430F5438A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5438, , CCSTUDIO

Hello!

I haven't used CCS for a while, and I wanted to download the latest version, 12.2. I'm using Linux Ubuntu.

When I tried to install it, there was a panel listing a few unsupported devices, including MSP430F5438.

What about 5438A? Will it work?

Best regards,

R

  • Hi R,

MSP430F5438A is expected to supported by CCSTUDIO (Code Composer Studio), same as MSP430F5438.

Maybe you can try to uninstall and then install CCS again, reference resource: https://www.ti.com.cn/tool/cn/CCSTUDIO.

  • Hello!

i have no problem at all with my CCS installation and therefore will not reinstall it.

The only problem is that at install time, there was a panel (unfortunately I didn't save it), which listed a few unsupported processors

    among which MSP430F5438.

I have verified on a custom board that it still seems to work. However, there might be some potential problems when the hardware is

shipped, and that's exactly what I want to know: what exactly is not supported for 5438 / 5438A, and what is the latest version supporting

    5438?

    Thanks!

  • Hi R,

You need use CCS to develop MSP430F5438 correct?

Actually, F5438A is a enhanced version for F5438, and they keep same project. I think you should be able to create F5438 peoject in CCS12, like this:

    Thanks!

  •  Hello!

    Thanks for your reply.

You need use CCS to develop MSP430F5438 correct?

Yes. I do use CCS with an older board using MSP430F5438 / MSP430F5438A and it works, but that's not the point.

If my hardware didn't work, I think it would be coherent with the panel and I would choose another chip.

Now my problem (please read this carefully!!):

    - CCS seems to work with MSP40F5438, so I could (maybe) use a few 100 chips I have in my lab.

    - BUT: the installer says it's not supported, and therefore there is an inconsistency somewhere. And my problem is:

Will it work just fine? In which case I would like to understand the meaning of the panel at install time.

Will some functionalities be missing, in which case what I built might not work properly in the future, in which case I have

to stick to an older version of CCS.

    So to summarize:

    - Don't tell me how to setup CCS to make it work, I know how to do and it does work.

    - Tell me what is the reason of this panel at install time, that says MSP430F5438 is not supported.

    R

  • Hi R,

I don't find any issue for CCS12.2 to support MSP430F5438 device. They are work normal, thus I think you can ignore this panel.

    Thanks!
