I think the option you described above is probably the best.

If you'd like to see the interrupt timing yourself, you can toggle a pin inside the ISR and capture the output on a logic analyzer to view the relative timing between the transaction and UCTXCPTIFG

Unless you are sending a UART frame while you switch over to GPIO output I wouldn't expect other interrupts to occur. But I'm a little confused about your request:

However, high is the default idle state for UART. Can you share a drawing of how you would like the TX output to behave in your scenario?
