MSP430F5519: USB function

Part Number: MSP430F5519

Could you tell us about the USB function specification for  MSP430F5519IPNR?

Although this CPU has USB capabilities
1. Is the signal input (D+, D-) to the USB signal terminal allowed when power is not supplied to the CPU?
2. Could you tell us if there is a reference circuit to cut the signal input if it is not acceptable?

  • Hi Taku,

    1. Having any input without the device on could cause a back-powering and potentially damage the part. See the absolute maximum ratings below.
    2. We don't have a specific circuit to cut the signal input but I can help give you an idea.
      1. Utilize a transistor to act as a simple switch so that when the device is powered on then the signal can pass through. Here is a post about a month ago with a drawing of a similar idea. You would also want an RC component to match the delay of the startup of the device to guarantee device operation before the input, this can just be tied to the gate side of the transistor.

If you're powering the device from USB then this isn't a worry as the device would have power before the signal input, see the Starting a USB Design Using MSP430 for additional USB design information.

    Regards,

    Luke
