MSP430FR5994: Error Initializing Emulator: Could not set device VCC

Part Number: MSP430FR5994
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

I have been using and debugging my MSP430FR5994 Launchpad for a while without any issues. However, suddenly, I noticed that when I plugged in the Launchpad, only the red LED was lit, instead of the green LED as usual. I have tried to debug the device, but I encountered errors.

  1. When I tried to debug the device, I received the following error message: "MSP430: Error initializing emulator: A firmware update is required for the MSP430 Debug Interface (MSP-FET430UIF / MSP-FET / eZ-FET). Click the "Update" button to update the firmware and launch your debug session (this may require several update steps). DO NOT UNPLUG THE INTERFACE DURING THE UPDATE." After clicking the update button repeatedly, I received another error message that read "MSP430: Error initializing emulator: Could not set device Vcc," and the device does not debug.

  2. I expected the device to debug successfully, and for the green LED to light up upon connection to the computer. Instead, only the red LED lights up, and the device cannot be debugged.
  3. Troubleshooting: So far, I have tried clicking the "Update" button repeatedly as instructed in the error message, but I still receive the same error. I have also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the device, but the issue persists.

  4. I removed the jumper connecting the 3.3V and measured with mulitmeter the voltage from the ez-fet, gave 3.3V but after connecting to target device again I was getting 0V basically

  5. I would appreciate any suggestions or solutions that can help resolve this issue.

  6. Thank you in advance for any assistance or support that can be provided.

  • Hi Emmanuel,

Based on what you described in #4 it sounds like you have a short on the MCU (not ezFET) side of the board.

    Evan

  • Thanks Evan,

I removed the jumper connecting the 3.3V side of ez-fet to the target 3.3V and I powered the target VCC with an external 3.3V, device seems to work fine.

I noticed my device not debugging properly though, while running it doesn't pause at times

But this will be the second launchpad I am experiencing this issue, is there possibly a solution to this or precaution to avoid this from re-occuring?

Thanks for your feedback in advance

  • How much current does the device draw when plugged into an external source? Are you powering other devices with this power rail? If the current is too much and LaunchPads built in regulator can't supply enough current that could explain #4.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any workarounds until we know the root cause!

    Regards,

    Evan
