I'm taking a closer look at the MSP430F5438A datasheet and it looks like even though the device supports a BSL on Port 1.1 and 1.2, this isn't actually tied to a hardware USCI peripheral? Is this correct? So if a customer wanted to use a shared BSL/ UART interface they would have to implement a software UART on these pins? Otherwise which UART peripheral is this associated with?

Hey Munan,
That does seem to be the case. On some F5xx devices, this question comes up and the answer is usually that you have to configure "Port Mapping", but that doesn't seem to be available on the F5438A.
You can look at the source code for the MSP430F543xA BSL here from the "Customize your MSP430 BSL" app note. Looking at that code, it does seem the BSL has implemented a software UART.
So, I guess you have two options to use the same UART port for field updates.
1. Implement software UART in the application code.
2. Customize the BSL to use a UART module.
