MSP-EXP430G2: Mac OS support

With the MSP432P401R I had to update the firmware on a PC before it would work (and update!) on a Mac. I don't know if that is the case here.

But I know they work on my Mac with CCS 10.

Could you check a couple of things for me?

Is the power LED on the launchpad on when you plug the device in via USB?

Are all jumpers on the board populated properly?

Please see response from my customer:

Yes, the power led is on when I plug it via USB.

All the connections recibe power properly with the jumpers and the leds and buttons on the board.

TI will have to comment, but this appears to be the old launchpad, That might be the reason it is not working with a new version of CCS, but TI will have to confirm.

Thank you for the image. I will recreate this issue with the provided version of CCS along with the launchpad and get back to you.

I was able to test an MSP430G2553 with CCS 11.1.0.00011 on Windows and didn't have any connection issues when running example code from MSP430Ware. I am currently working on getting a Mac to test on as well.

In the meantime, there are some things that would be great to check.

Do they have MSP430Ware installed on their machine, and can CCS see that it is installed? They should be able to see it under the Discovered Products list in Preferences > Code Composer Studio > Products. If they don't have it installed, they can download from the link here. I have version 3.80.14.01 working. If they have it installed but cannot see it on the Discovered Products list, they should be able to see it after clicking the refresh button or editing the Discovery path (on that same page) then clicking the refresh button.

After ensuring MSP430Ware is installed, can they attempt to run an example for the MSP4302553? I would suggest the msp430g2xx3_1 example, as it should simply blink an LED. They can import this by opening Resource Explorer inside CCS and find the project with the extension shown in the screenshot below. Just click the import button, select the device, and attempt to debug the project.

I was able to test this issue on a Mac with MacOS Monterey installed along with all matching TI software specs. I did in fact receive the same error message on multiple versions of CCS. It's a good possibility that this is specifically an OS issue. Can you confirm that your customer's machine is running on Monterey and not another MacOS version? If they are able to, it is worth testing on a different MacOS version apart from Monterey.

I will follow up with my team Monday morning to assess if there is anything else we can do to keep troubleshooting this issue.

Finally, why did people ignore me?

Not sure.  Your thought earlier in the thread was correct.

We do call this out in the CCS installer but that does not help much if you try this board much later on.

Basically anything with the old eZ430 debug probe is not supported on macOS.

So based on what I read in the thread there is no support for mac OS. So there is no way I can make that work? Maybe ccs cloud or something like a virtual machine with windows using parallels? Please note that the windows that I can use in a virtual machine is windows 11 but the arm version and I wasn't able to install ccs in that os.

CCS Cloud will have the same issue.

Running a VM is not going to work as it is going to be Windows for Arm which is not supported.

The MSP-EXP430G2 is not supported on macOS.  

The easiest answer is to just get a https://www.ti.com/tool/MSP-EXP430G2ET. They are $10.
