Need advice on choosing Microcontroller

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F6638, MSP430F6636

Hi, I am trying to build a clock with alarm.

The microcontroller should be able to interface with microphone, speaker, SD card, LED or LCD display, and buttons.

Is there any suitable microcontroller in msp430 family? Thanks.

  • There are many to choose from. See:

    http://focus.ti.com/paramsearch/docs/parametricsearch.tsp?sectionId=95&tabId=1200&familyId=342&family=mcu

Some can drive LCD "glass" directly. Others need LCD "modules". For speaker, you may need an external amplifier because MSP430 does not have enough power unless you use a low power buzzer.

  • An MSP430 with ADC (mic), DAC (speaker), USCI (SD card), and an LCD controller all built in seems ideal.  The parametric search OCY mentioned should help you find these features.

If cost is not a factor, the MSP430F6636 (128KB flash) or MSP430F6638 (256KB flash) are both very nice for your requirements.
