MSP430f552x is warming when USB is plugged in

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5521

I've got a serious problem involving the MSP430F5521 and the USB connection. When the supply voltage is 3.3V and plug in and unplug the USB a few times in sequence, the MSP430F5521 is warm (150 degrees Celsius = 302 degrees Fahrenheit). If I wait a few minutes before reconnecting the USB, it does not happens. Whate is the problem and the how to solve?

PS.: The firmware is the cdc example fromTI

  • Did you supply 3V3 rail to the Vusb pin for self-powered configuration?

TI's USB examples are set up for bus-powered configuration. If you would supply external power over Vusb pin, you should disable on-chip USB LDO. Otherwise, you may see power conflict at Vusb pin.

This self-powered configuration is not recommended.
USB MSP chips are designed so that the USB power domain can be supplied by VBUS pin, separately from DVCC - core power domain. That is, the USB power domain powers up just when the USB port is sourced by a host. In this way, you may reduce power consumption of battery while USB is unplugged.

Cut off Vusb from 3V3 rail, and attach just 220nF bypass capacitor to this pin. On-board power supply sources just DVCC (and AVCC). You may be better to replace the fried chip to a new one.
