MSP430FR2672: Resolution of Captivate

Part Number: MSP430FR2672

Hi Team,

What is the resolution of Capativate technology in MSP430FR2672.

Is it same as the ADC block in the the device or different?

  • Hi Prayag,

The Captivate peripheral is a Capacitance to Digital converter (CDC) which uses a charge-transfer method to take the measurements.  You can read more about this in the Captivate Techology Guide, Technology chapter.  The effective resolution for Captivate is approximately 13-bits by design, but in reality it will be something less.  Is there a customer wanting to know? and if so do we know the application?

  • Thanks Denis,

Yes there is a customer looking for a solution on Fuel level monitoring of vehicles. They aim to have 99.2% accuracy to beat their competitor.

    Any recommendations?

Do we have any SDK to help them get started on?

  • Hi Prayag,

Although Captivate can be used for liquid level sensing, the SDK library was created to support HMI inputs like buttons or sliders, not level sensing. However, there are several low-level functions in the SDK that would allow the user to create an algorithm.  Our Team in Germany did some research and development on liquid level several years ago.  Attached is a zip file containing all the relevant information and a couple of movies.

From experience, I can say it would be very difficult to meet/beat a 99.2% accuracy.
