MSP430FR6047: Ultrasonic sensing evaluation module not reading flowrate properly

Part Number: MSP430FR6047

I have an issue with evaluation board for ultrasonic sensing which has MSP430FR6047 chip. Im using it to get liquid flow rate. And followed the documentation from TI ti.com/lit/ug/slau810b/slau810b.pdf?ts=1700559205755&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FEVM430-FR6047. I tried the test with both using audiowell pipe with transducers. And also, with a custom setup of pair of ultrasonic transducers mounted on a pipe as shown in the below attachment.

And also, I have used the firmware from here mentioned in the SS.

When I'm doing the test, I'm observing is that. the flowrate in GPM shows unstable readings which confirmed with a reference meter connected to test setup.

Also, LED3 which is light up (ERROR condition) And also on USS GUI it is showing error logs as no signal detected even though transducers are fit to the pipe closely and with

sufficient amount of ultrasonic gel applied to the pipe. Could you please guide me on what else should I do for getting the flowmeter up? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Adarsh,

The "No signal detected" error could also be caused by the wires being connected incorrectly, or loosely, have you checked the wires to make sure they're connected to the correct pins and that they are fully plugged into the transducers?

Could you post a picture of your ADC capture and your configuration settings? If the problem is not with the wiring, it is likely in the configuration of the device.

    Thanks

  • Hi Dylan,

Yes, I have thoroughly checked the wires to ensure they are connected correctly. They are securely and properly plugged into the transducers, and I have confirmed that each wire is fully and snugly connected to the correct pins. Additionally, I've taken care to insulate the wires properly to prevent any issues.

Certainly, I have both the ADC capture and the configuration settings available. I will share the picture of Configuration parameter and Video of ADC waveform with you to provide a detailed overview of the current setup.

But the value shows in MSP board isn't same as value shows in reference meter  ,both in GPM unit. Hereby attach the video of the value comparison

  • Hi Dylan,

conducted testing with an updated configuration, increased the water level in the tank, and applied glue to seal all areas meticulously, preventing potential minute leakages. Im also verified that the motor is receiving an ample water supply. Included below are the updated details, such as the ADC waveform, configuration parameters, MSP values, and more.

  • Are you still getting errors from the device with the updated settings? The changes you made look good, and the resulting flow rate looks good as well, aside from the occasional spike. I assume there are no bubbles in the pipe either?

Could you please send a picture of your dToF as well? I am wondering if this could be an issue we call "cycle slip". You may want to increase your envelope setting threshold, to see if this eliminates the spikes in your data.

One thing that is concerning is that your ADC capture shows an amplitude of about 300. We try to get amplitudes closer to 800-900. One way to increase this is to increase the programmable gain. Sometimes this leads to other problems though. Can you try increasing yours? If you start to notice the readings are worse, please let me know, and add a screenshot of your ADC capture as well.

  • Hi Dylan,

As per you mentioned adjusted the values of gain to get required ADC capture amplitude also attaching the dToF wave form

  • Adarsh,

Thank you for providing this updated information. Your ADC capture looks pretty good, and your volume flow rate looks more accurate as well. It looks like your moving average is quite steady around 20 gph. I assume this is close to your actual flow rate (which was ~19.4gph in previous videos). If your VFR is only slightly off by a certain offset value, you can utilize the "delta ToF offset" setting in the USS GUI to fine-tune the value that you get, and center it on the actual flowing value.

  • Hi Dylan,

Thank you for your detailed feedback and observations on the ADC capture and volume flow rate. I will try to fine-tune the value that obtained
