MSP430FR5989-EP: MSP-FET Debugger Problem

Part Number: MSP430FR5989-EP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR5989, MSP-FET

Tool/software:

Hello,

We are using MSP430FR5989 MCU in our project. We couldn't connect to MSP430 microcontroller by using MSP-FET debugger. We got "MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device" error.

According to our configuration, firstly we convert JTAG signals to differential pairs with RS422 transmitters and receivers and we connect them to a external test card. Then, those differential pairs are converted to single ended

signals with RS422 transmitters and receivers and they are connected to the MSP430 microcontroller.

Up to now,

_ We have changed the MSP-FET debugger and nothing changed.

_ We have changed the version of CCS and development PC  with different project

_ We have updated the MSP-FET drivers

_ All signals coming from a test card to MSP430 is checked and no problem occurred

_ Original cable of MSP-FET and extra 10 cm extension cables are used.

What might be the reason of it?

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards.

  • The error means that the MSP-FET is not getting the correct communication back from the MSP430. Was this set-up working in the first place, and recently stopped working? Or in other words has this layout ever been tested and shown to be working before?

You may want to probe the communication lines connecting directly to the MSP-FET to see if it is receiving any signal, or a bad signal. The error message indicates to me that the MSP-FET is working properly and that the communication breakdown is occurring downstream, between the FET the the MSP430FR5989.

  • Hello,

We have found the problem. Two pins of JTAG connector are barely touch the MCU card and they behaved randomly. Thanks for helping.

    Regards.
