UART to read a memory location.

Either the firmware serves the UART and obeys a 'read firmware number' command, or you use the BSL to read a memory location. The BSL is a serial connection too, but on different pins and with a driver software that is factory-provided and not erased when you erase the flash for new firmware. (See the appnote about BSL)

And which device are you using?

some devices don't have Factory programmed UART BSL and some have USB BSL.

I don't know much about Gang430, I think you cannot read a particular memory location but you can 

specify the address range or a memory block to read.

I am using MSP430GANG programmer to program MSP430. I am not used to BSL. What hardware is needed for BSL loader.

The above user guide has more details about Bootstrap Loader Hardware in "Chapter 4".

In our case we use the easiest way i.e GangPro430/FlashPro430 which support BSL interface,

and the modifications that is needed on the target board is described here.
