MSP430F5529: Can we build a cable tester ?

Part Number: MSP430F5529
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: XTR117, RCV420, SN74LVC07A

Tool/software:

Hi Forum,

I'm trying to build a Circuit which can tell us if cable is not connected properly or cable have shorting between 2 lines..

There are 2 different board in my project,

One will be msp430 controller board, Other board in different location, In between I'm using a 15 meter cable..

Do we have any ICs or Circuits which can let us know if any cable loose connection or if there is any shorting in the cable pins..

I have been reviewing about different 4-20mA current loop circuits and as part of that i seen xtr117 transmitter and rcv420.. can we able achieve a cable tester using these ICs ??

Best regards,

Tex

  • You can of course, but you can also send a pulse train down the line and use the receiver devices' ADC to verify that it comes through OK, and only on the proper line. If you want more current, you could use an open drain buffer and a pull up on the other end.

  • Hi Keith,

    Thanks for your reply,

I'm having 10 lines in that cable used for different purposes, i should be able to check disconnection in each and every line and also 2nd board is having less space..

Can you suggest any simple circuit..

    Kind regards,

    Tex

  • The transmitter will use 10 gpio's and have SN74LVC07A hex open drain buffers, so you need 2.

You also need 10 ADC inputs connected to the cable side of each buffer.

The receiver will have 10 pull up resistors that connect to 3.3 V and monitored by 10 ADC's. Draw about 10mA per pullup.

Start with all outputs low. Verify that the voltage at the receiver is low on each pin. If not, you have an open circuit.

One at a time, set the tx output high. Verify that the corresponding pin on the RX is high.

Set all the tx pins high. one at a time, set each low and verify that it goes low at the RX. Check all the other lines, if any go low you have a short across the lines.

  • That's really good idea keith,

The xtr117 is a two-wire transmitter with this i need to build for a total of 10 channels and with respect to that the number of transistors and other passives also be used.

If my assumption is correct, I'm having very less space in both the boards to use these many ICs, Please share any reference circuit for better understanding..

Or is there any alternate ways to do this which consists less circuitry ?

    Kind regards

    Tex

  • Hi Tex,
We don't have a circuit that explicitly lets us know if there is a cable loose connection. It could be created, though it isn't a priority.
