MSP430F6775A: Capacitance

Part Number: MSP430F6775A

Tool/software:

Hi,

I would like to ask about the internal capacitor values for the MSP430F6775A device for calculation purposes. Also is it okay to use the default configuration of XDRIVE and XCAP when external capacitors are connected? It seems to have no effect on the device or the communication peripheral, regardless of the XCAP value selected. Does it have any effect, and can it damage the device or components if the proper XCAP and XDRIVE values are not set, even if the communication seems to work? I have used this formula to calculate the CL CL=(C1*C2)/(C1+C2)+Cp where cp is parasitic capacitance on each terminal and C1 is capacitance connected to Xin and C2 to Xout. I am just not sure whether the formula is okay and also how was the xcap values in datasheet calculated cuz I have noticed the values in the datasheets Integrated effective load capacitance, LF mode and there were no individual capacitance provided just the final CL,eff values and I dont know how they get the 5.5pF for example cuz there is no single capcaitor capacitance provided just some no device specific values in the MSP430f5/f6 datasheet.

  • Hi,

With improper XCAP or XDRIVE values, it usually would not damage the MCU. The down side of it could be the crystal can not start oscillated.

The formula CL=(C1*C2)/(C1+C2)+Cp is correct. Usually, the crystal datasheet will give a CL spec and you can use this formula to calculate C1 and C2.

    Best regards,
