CAPTIVATE-FR2633: Using the CAPTIVATE-FR2633 and CAPTIVATE-BSWP with plate

Part Number: CAPTIVATE-FR2633
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR2633

Tool/software:

Hello, we're trying to use the CAPTIVATE-FR2633 to test touch capabilities of the BSWP board and MSP430FR2633 chip. We'd like to test with the touchpad taped under 1mm of plastic, but we're not getting any readings. If you can provide any help, that would be greatly appreciated. I'm using the UART example but it's not getting any readings.

  • Hi Joe,

When you say "touchpad" do you mean like on a laptop for XY position detection with multiple channels, or do you mean a single electrode/channel (button) like the ones on the BSWP board?

  • Yes, a single electrode. I was referring to the buttons on the BSWP board. Trying to use the FR2633_Backchannel_UART example, which senses touches fine without any plastic plate on top.

  • Ok, the BSWP PCB is a ~2 to 3mm plastic overlay so you should have no trouble getting a touch through this material.  What do you have set for your target conversion count?  Start with 250.  If that doesn't work, try 500.  That should be more than enough.  Can you capture the Captivate Design Center Bar graph view of that channel with and without a touch?

  • It may have something to do with the plastic we're using:

This is the result of bad 1mm plastic (pressing on 3):

this is with 1mm sla plastic (finger on top of 3-4):

I can consider this problem solved - thank you very much for pointing me to the design center so that i can see the behaviour in real time. I'd like to create firmware for making a MSP430FR2633 slave chip that can communicate simple information (such as button 3 pressed) to other chips - I think the UART example works quite well if I can get it to compile - so next is for that to be resolved. Are the variables of conversion count and other tuning parameters changeable in the code?
