MSP430FR2355: Wanted to have clarification about the IDE

Part Number: MSP430FR2355
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SYSCONFIG

Tool/software:

I am very new to TI family, today i received evalution board, i have experience working with ARM and AVR and worked on stm32 mostly with cube ide, I was just about to start TI, and got confused at the very first stage, at the download page of code composer studio, websites listed V20.x as latest and i installed that. when i launched code composer studio i cam to know it is based on theia very similar to VS code, what i was expecting is eclipse based IDE. after researching on this topic i couldnt get much clarity, i have few questions :

  1. Why did TI upgraded the new version to theia?
  2. will TI continue supporting and further development of eclipse based IDE? like v12
  3. is theia based code composer better for development or eclipse base? whats the differnce?
  • Hey Sunil,

Welcome to the ecosystem but sorry for the confusion!  You are correct that the latest CCS v20 is now Theia based (VS code like) and v12 is Eclipse based.  This complete switch just recently happened in the last few weeks.  For the last year or so, both versions were available in parallel but going forward, CCS v20 (theia based) will be our mainline.

My understanding is that a large majority of the market has moved to VS code/Theia based IDEs and so we are moving along as well.  CCS v12 is still fully functional, but will only be receiving updates if there are any bug patches needed.  All new features and development will be invested into v20, so I would suggest you use v20 as well.

Some of the documentation and tutorials may still show the eclipse based tool but we will be updating those all as well as we move into the new year.  If you have any trouble or questions, feel free to ask here.  I can't guarantee you will always get a response as quickly as this one happens to be, but our team tries to engage with all posts in the first 24 hours.

    Thanks,

    JD

  • Hey JD,

    Thanks for the quick reply

I have one more doubt regarding the same post and it is like all the SDK which were getting used in Eclipse based IDE, will remain same here with theia based IDE? or will it change?

  • Hey Sunil,

Sorry for the delay as I was out of office.  The SDK, sysconfig, software libraries, ect are independent of the IDE so they will remain the same.

    Thanks,

    JD
