MSP430F5308: MSP430F5308

Part Number: MSP430F5308
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, MSP-FET

Tool/software:

Hello,

I'm working with an embedded system that contains an MSP430F5308 as a subprocessor gathering sensor data.  I've needed to create a homemade cable to connect the MSP-FET to this processor via a JTAG (custom) 10-pin header.  For some time, this has worked well, and I have been able to connect/program and erase the processor as needed with UniFlash.  Recently I've seen two cases where the UniFlash program cannot connect to the processor at all.  The response I get from the software is "No debug probes/devices detected."   My workstation is using Windows 11, and the Device Manager reports that the MSP Application UART1 and MSP Debug Interface virtual comm ports are "working properly".

I've double checked the connections being made between the MSP-FET and the custom pinout 10-pin connector for the target (MSP430F5308) using the appropriate TI documentation, done a continuity check between both ends of that custom cable I created, and verified that in each of the two cases the MSP430 processors appear to still be up and running.

Unless I did something accidentally, neither processor was secured such that the JTAG interface was disabled.  Is there any case where something like this could occur?

Thank you very much.

You mentioned that the operation failed twice, how many times did you do it in the process? Currently, can you program or erase device successfully? Could you please consider using CCS www.ti.com/.../CCSTUDIO as PC sides software to try it?

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

I should have clarified.  I have two circuit boards that I was able to initially use UniFlash to erase/program the MSP430F5308 processors, and then at some point UniFlash was unable to connect to the microcontrollers on either of the two boards.  At that time, UniFlash would show "no debug probes/devices detected".

I have been using CCS all along to work with the MSP430 processors, and the IDE was not able to connect to the (two) processors either when I initiated a debug session.

  • Hello

Currently, for both circuit packs, does the CCS or uniflash connection fail sometimes or every time?

    Thanks

  • Hello,

For both circuit boards, neither CCS or UniFlash can connect to the MSP430F5308 processor.  For both PCBs, I was initially able to connect/erase/program the processor, and then after 2 weeks or so, it seems the JTAG connections stopped working/connecting.

Should there be any series resistance between the JTAG signal lines, or in series with the TEST/SBWTCK  or /RST connections?  i didn't see anything like that mentioned in the documentation....

Currently the boards have a 47K resistor and 10nF cap connected to the /RST pin on the MSP430f5308....  Here are the connections I have between the MSP-FET and the target (10-pin connector):

    MSP-FET pin             Target pin/Connection (10-PIN 2x5 0.1" pitch)

    1  TDO/TDI                 2   PJ.0/TDO

    3  TDI/VPP                 4   PJ.1/TDI/TCLK

    4  VCC_TARGET       1   3.3V (TARGET)

    5  TMS                        6   PJ.2/TMS

    7  TCK                        8   PJ.3/TCK

    8  TEST/VPP              7   TEST/SBWTCK

    9  GND                       9   GND (TARGET)

    11  RST                      5   /RST/NMI/SBWTDIO

This is strange. Currently, I don't have idea on the root course of this issue.

Could you please kindly check the JTAG connection based on MSP Debuggers User's Guide (Rev. O): www.ti.com/.../slau647o.pdf

    Thanks

  • Hello,

I'm marking this ticket as resolved as for now we don't need a resolution for this issue.  Thank yo very much for your support.
