MSP430FR5969: Understanding the I2C Master Transmitter Mode picture

Part Number: MSP430FR5969

Tool/software:

All,

I am trying to wrap my head around this diagram. I don't quite understand what is going on, especially the different arrows pointing up and down. Trying to understand what is going on.

  • The most common sequence runs (mostly) across the top line. S=Start [repeated-Start isn't distinguished], P=Stop, A=ACK, A-bar=NACK. Going down the page, the events are successively less likely. The word "stall" is significant, since these are cases where your code needs to take action.

It's pretty dense, but it's nice to have something that fits on one page.

  • If you go back to the beginning of that section there is a key in Figure 32-8. Which helps make sense of the shaded boxes.

The bold arrows show branches in the way things can go. For example on the top line to the right it shows the transaction completing with a stop. Just below that is a repeated start in transmitter mode (with a box showing which bits are set to do that) and below that a restart as a receiver.
