MSP430G2553: Update and Recovery Failed.

I just received a new MSP-EXP430G2ET LaunchPad kit with an MSP430G2553 MCU. When I tried flashing the "MSP-EXP430G2ET - LaunchPad Out Of Box Demo" in CCS 20.1.0 it asked me to update which failed with the error below. Now it needs recovery, which also fails. I've tried recovery with CCS the MSP Flasher and the FET-Pro430 by Elprotronic, but all fail. I have the same problem with two different MSP430FR boards, which failed to update and can't be recovered. I thought buying a newer board would fix this, but apparently not. The LP-MSP430FR2476 updated without a problem and I've tried on a different system, so I believe there is no issue with my setup.

I now have three bricked boards by using TI's software, I hope you can help me.

Error in CCS:

MSP430: Error initializing emulator: A firmware update is required for the MSP430 Debug Interface (MSP-FET430UIF / MSP-FET / eZ-FET). Click the "Update" button to update the firmware and launch your debug session (this may require several update steps). DO NOT UNPLUG THE INTERFACE DURING THE UPDATE.
MSP430: Error: MSP-FET / eZ-FET core(communication layer) update failed
MSP430: Error initializing emulator: One of the connected MSP-FETs / eZ-FETs debuggers needs recovery. Select 'Recover' to start the recovery process. Note: Only one MSP-FET / eZ-FET debugger can be connected to your system during recovery.

Hello Julia,

1. You can check whether you have installed the driver firstly, refer to below post:

2. Then when you install CCS, I think you have chosen the MSP430 core when it let you choose the supported MCU package, right?

3. It seems that the error is caused by MSP-FET firmware update failed. If when you try to download code into MSP430 chip, a window occurs to let you update the firmware, please click update. And we also provide a separate tool to update the firmware of MSP-FET, you can find it 2235.FET-Pro430-Lite-Setup-V3.3.zip

1: I installed the driver package linked in the post, but it did not solve the issue.

2: I believe so, but I get the same error in the online CCS version or any other software e.g. IAR Embedded Workbench.

3: I have installed FET-Pro430 before, but I get the same error with the version you provided:

Your linked Post mentions using another system solved their problem. I will try a few more systems, the two I tried so far had the same error. With 3 of 4 boards having the same error, I think it's very unlikely they are all broken.

Hello Julia,

It seems so strange that why you can't use it normally. And it seems that you can use LP-MSP430FR2476 normally.

There are three further commons:

1). Please try to download CCS 12.8 version to do tests (20.0 has some difference with version 12.8 and below). When you install it, please remember to choose all device support package (you may find that it will let choose which device can be supported in your install process).

2). In theory, connecting the LP with PC, then you can use it normally. So it is strange why you can't use it. Please refer to this guide to check whether you miss some points.

3). Your chip is MSP430G2553, why in the figure of FET-PRO430 you shared me, you choose MSP430FR6989?
