MSP430FR5949: Looking for the correct Target Development Board

Part Number: MSP430FR5949
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-TS430RHA40A, MSP-TS430RGZ48C,

Tool/software:

I have some MSP430FR5949IRHAR chips I would like to preprogram but wanted to ensure I order the correct target board. The MSP-TS430RGZ48C is listed as the target board but it is for a 48 pin RGZ package. The MSP430FR5949IRHAR is a 40 pin RHA part. It looks like the MSP-TS430RHA40A would be compatible since it is for 40 pin RHAs.

  • Hi Cassidy,
I looked into our hardware guide, and it seems there isn't a socket board compatible with that specific package for the FR5949. Tomorrow, I will double-check the schematics between the MSP-TS430RHA40A and the MSP-TS430RGZ48C to see if there is a possibility that you could use it for your intended purposes. Otherwise, you will have to create a custom board to program the device.

  • Hi Cassidy,
I double check the pins, and I can safely say that the MSP430FR5949IRHAR is not compatible with the MSP-TS430RHA40A due that the pins are not aligned. My recommendation will be to design a board to program this device package.

  • After I posted this question, I actually found a related thread that resolved my issue: "MSP430FR5949 MCU development board". I ended up ordering the MSP-TS430RHA40A, removed C9, and I was able to program the MSP430FR5949 successfully. I was even able to test out the code I wrote for my application and the pins were mapped as outlined in the schematic. Just in case someone has this same issue later.

  • Hi Cassidy,
Thanks for pointing this out. I agree that this seems to be the best fix to make the MSP-TS430RHA40A work with the MSP430FR5949 40-Pin RHA package.
