MSP430G2955: MSP430G2955IDA38

Part Number: MSP430G2955

Tool/software:

Hello there,

We need some assistance with one of our projects involving the MSP430G2955 microcontroller. We're currently using the device with a 1 MHz internal clock and testing it with a Burst Field Generator (linked below) to evaluate susceptibility to electromagnetic interference.

Burst Field Generator:
https://www.langer-emv.de/en/product/mini-burst-field-generators/13/p1-set-mini-burst-field-generators/310/p11-mini-burst-field-generator-b/68

When applying an 8 ns rise time B-field pulse at 5 kHz frequency, the MCU often resets. However, in some cases, it gets stuck indefinitely and requires a power on to recover. Although we have enabled the watchdog timer, it doesn’t appear to help in these cases.

We would appreciate any advice on improving the PCB layout or software robustness to mitigate this issue.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Serhat

  • Hi Serhat,
Is there a particular place where you are applying the Burst Field? If it's random, then this seems to be a hardware issue. My first recommendation will be to look over our Reference designs on this product's page, and take a look over the layout for that reference design. That should give you a good reference point for your current PCB layout.

  • Hi Diego,

    Thank you for your response.

We are applying a burst field around the MCU at a distance of approximately 3 mm, as recommended by the device's user manual. The bursts are applied randomly around the MCU.

We’ve observed activity on the reset pin during testing. It appears that when the burst is applied near the reset pin, it causes a hardware reset. As far as I can tell, this results in a restart rather than causing the MCU to struct. Still cant solve the struct problem.

We’ve made some layout improvements, but in certain cases, the MCU still gets stuck indefinitely. We'll review the reference design for further improvements.

    Best regards,

    Serhat Guner

  • Hi Serhat,
Sounds good. Let me know if you need further help. We can also conduct schematic reviews to address any schematic-related questions you may have. For more information, please contact your sales representative.

I have to assume that this is the burst generator manual.

Are you really going to design an unshielded system where EMI can be injected 3mm from the MCU?
