Is it safer to use Automotive MSP430?

Hello,

 

It is glad to hear about new series of MSP430 for Automotive.

But we still have the question is it safer to use this MCU in Automobile?

 

The product folder says "AEC-Q100 certification",

does it mean, TI has modified/rebuilt MSP430(revised MCU) to make it 

suitable for Automobile industry?

or the current MSP430 tested for the AEC-Q100 certification?

 

We have customers who are interested in this MCU and we need to 

know more details before recommending this product.

    Thanks for your question.  Yes the current MSP430 devices that are released for automotive (have a Q1 at the end of the part number) are fully AEC-Q100 qualified.  We were able to do this without re-design of the devices.

    - we can understand the automotive MSP430 series is released few months back,

      do you have any customers using it already in their automobile application.

      (A success story would make our marketers to promote the device easily)

     

    - As you said TI did without re-designing the devices,

      why TI doesn't release the automotive MSP430 previously(few years back),

      what is the reason to release the product now?

  • Hi Ayus,

     

    I cannot comment on customer specifics but yes we have customers that are either designing it into their products and/or committed to using it.  Because of the temperature range and performance of the part, auto body applications are the most popular application so far.  Also popular are using the MSP430 as a system power manager since it has very low quiescent current and can save overall system power.

     

    The device and the organization to support the MSP430 has historically targeted industrial and commercial designs.  The MSP430 has a huge benefit where very low power consumption is required and is great for those types of applications or battery-powered applications.  Historically power was not much of a consideration in automotive.  However with the increasing content of electronics in vehicles, there is now frequently low-power requirements being specified for automotive designs.  This is just one reason that we decided to move this into our Automotive Microcontroller organization to support MSP430 for Automotive.  Overall we see this as a nice opportunity for us with a growing TAM.
