MSP430FR5043: Frequency dependence of measurement accuracy

Part Number: MSP430FR5043

Tool/software:

Hello everyone,

I would like to use the MSP430-FR5043 in a flow meter application with 2,1 MHz transducers. Now I wonder, if this chip is the right choice for the use with these transducers and have some questions.

My first question is:

Does the transducer frequency have any influence on the measurement accuracy?

In the data sheet of the MSP430-FR5043, it is said, that it is possible to use transducers with frequencies up to 2,5 MHz. But with a samplerate of 8 MHz this seems very high, because we have only about 3 samplepoints per period for this frequency. So is the possible measurement accuracy and robustness, especially for the calculation of delta t, much better for smaller frequencies (e. g. 1 MHz) than for higher frequencies (e. g. 2 MHz)?  Or does the transducer frequency not affect the correlation or tof algorithm very much?

I would really appreciate if somenone has any reliable information (e. g. technical paper) or experiences about such a possible correlation of measurement accuracy and transducer frequency.

A second, connected question is:

Is one of the available MSP430 flow meter microcontroller in general better or worse suited for higher frequencies (e. g. 2,1 MHz)? So is there probably a better choice than the MSP430-FR5043 and why?

Thank you already for all answers!

Best regards,

Lukas Schmidt

  • Hi,

    1. The transducer frequency has little impacts on the measurement accuracy.

    2. Actually, we only recommend to use around 4 times of the transducer frequency as the ADC sampling frequency. Such as, using 1MHz transducer with 3.6MHz ADC sampling frequency. For 2MHz transducer with 7.2MHz ADC sampling frequency.

Please find more details in this application note. https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaaes9/slaaes9.pdf

MSP430FR604x MCU is suitable for 2MHz and 1MHz transducer for water meter application. They are the best options for you for this application.

  • Hi,

thank you for the answer. I had a look at the application note. Now I would like to know, If there is a reason to use a MSP430FR604x instead of the MSP430FR5043? As I understand, 5xxx means without LCD Interface (I don't need this) and xxx3 means USS_A module, which has even more functionalities than the normal USS module. So the MSP430FR5043 seems to be a good choice for this application or am I wrong and there are other differences that are problematic?

  • Hi Lukas, Your understanding is right and you can use the MSP430FR5043 device (which is the non-LCD variant) in smaller packages. Performance wise it’s the same for Ultrasonic Sensing aspects.
