Hello,

I am looking to test the onchip USB BSL feature of the device thru' hardware method as described in SLAA452b,Page 2 . At the beginning i don't want to go with Custom

Flash Based BSL design

Crystal on the board is 25 MHz (X2).I have coded a small project which doesn't have any code related to USB.

The device is power by external LDO ( LDO powered from usb VBUS supply ). USB interfacs h/w is as per app note slaa452b .Instead of a switch I have shorted the

PUR and VUSB thru' 100 Ohm.

I have open up the firmware update utility and connected the PC USB connector to device.

I got a pop-up message on PC saying Device not recognized i.e means PC (host) detected a USB device but in enumeration process it didn't get a suitable driver to load.

But as MSP430 reports itself as a HID device should it n't be recognized ??

How do i get the TI's on chip usb bsl tested ?

where did i go wrong ??

Problem solved!

the enumeration failure indicates that the BSL has loaded successfully but the USB fails due to wrong settings (mostly clock) of the BSL.

In the Application report SLAA452A it's mentioned that the BSL will automatically detect the XT2 frequency if it is (4, 8, 12 or 24 MHz).

Though I had a 12 MHz crystal at XT2 I still had the enumeration failure. I tried to move my BSL entry code sequence to the very

beginning of my program and in this case, it succeeded. So evidently, some setting in the code caused the problem. (which I think it should

not as the BSL has its own USB stack and clears Ram before loading and should take care of setting its own registers).

So in the end I noticed that changing the value of the B7 timer divider expansion register caused this issue. So I added (TB0EX0 = 0;) before the BSL entry sequence code and it worked.

I have to say that I tried the same thing on another device that had a 4MHz crystal at XT2 and it seemed that changing that same register

didn't affect the BSL and it enumerated successfully all the times. Which made me think that probably the 4MHz is the BSL default and it

only uses timer B7 to detect other frequencies, and because of a BSL bug (not reseting the B7 expansion divider) it fails to detect other frequencies.

I verified this by changing the register value to a non-default value before the BSL entry code (all at the very start of the program right after stopping the watchdog) on

the 12 MHz XT2 Device and it failed.

I am using an MSP430F5510 and the recommended hardware entry method as show in section 4.5 of SLAAA452C. I have a Seiko Epson FA-128 24.000Mhz crystal with 12 pf load caps connected to X2. I get the USB device not recognized in Windows 7. I suspect I'm not oscillating. My scope shows no activity at the crystal. Any thoughts?

Can you debug the initialization code through JTAG/SBW?

Please note that oscillscope probes affect the crystal too much; you have to output the clock to another of the MCU's pins.

Thanks for the reply. No I'm stuck with the USB BSL. I do see a 24 Mhz signal at the crystal, and yes I know the scope can affect it.
This thread makes me think that I should try 4 Mhz crystals. Whatcha think?

You previously said you see no activity at the crystal; now you say you do see a signal. Which one is correct?

The SBW lines would need to be connected to a FET (MSP-FET, or eZ-FET on a LaunchPad).

There is a 24 Mhz sine wave on one side of the crystal. Yes, I could connect them to my MSP-FET but then what? What edit would make the USB BSL come to life?

Can TI weigh in on this? Will the default BSL only recognize 4 Mhz crystals ?

24 MHz is supported by the BSL.

With the FET, you could try to debug the BSL, or program your firmware.

What is the exact error message you see in Windows? Does it show up in Device Manager?

Device not recognized. Also device malfunctioned. It shows up as unknown USB device.

I'm pretty sure my crystal isn't oscillating.

Tried a new assembly. This one is definitely oscillating at exactly 24 Mhz (per my picoscope). Still not being enumerated. Same messages.

If your Windows doesn't show anything useful, connect it to a Linux host, and show what it says in the system log.

And the frequency of these signals is 60.6 Mhz. Is this correct?
