One of my customers has been experiencing the following issue:

On MSP430G2553IRHB32R, we consistently have major percentage of units reboot randomly at any temperature. The error code reported to us is power event happened. But interestingly there is no brown out event reported.

We are operating with a 3.6V battery with enough current sourcing ability to deliver multi amps of current. We have set oscilloscope to trip if voltage ever falls lower than 2.8V and tested in on board that would reboot randomly and over multiple days we did not get oscilloscope to trigger indicating voltage to the processor was always greater.

Would your team to help us understand in what all circumstances will the MSP report this power event failure code where external power to the processor is stable?

Hi Abigail,
Can you share with me the error message? Also, how are they monitoring this error? Finally, what do they mean by any temperature? What is the current temperature range that the application currently runs at?

This particular part is a bit thin on reset information. Some causes, such as PC out of range, leave nothing behind.

I reached out to the customer and received the following feedback:

They let me know testing is from 1C deg to 60C deg. When unexpectedly rebooting, the IFG1 register has only the PORIFG (power-on reset) bit set. Is there any scenario where that could happen, other than an actual power event?

Sure. I just ran some code to show it. Branch to address 0 to force a PC out of range reset and look at PORIFG. If I don't include code to reset PORIFG before the branch, it is still set after the PC out of range reset.

For the PORIFG flag to mean something here it has to be cleared before this unexplained reset occurs.

Hi Diego and David, thank you for the response. I am checking with the team.

Could you also clarify a point on the interrupt vector table - It seems to suggest that program counter (PC) out of range will cause a system reset, not a hard fault, is this understanding correct?

I don't think I have ever seen a "hard fault" described anywhere for a MSP430. For a MC68000, yes. So I have no idea what you think one is. In any case, as previously described, when I deliberately created a PC out of range error, it resulted in a reset.

Hi Abigail,

I agree with David on regards of the "hard fault" state you are mentioning. You will be correct that the PC will generate a reset if it goes out of range.
